7 Steps to Finding the Perfect Foundation

How many types of foundation have you tried in the past? How many unused bottles or compacts of foundation do you have in your bathroom drawer now? Stop wasting money on foundations that look good in the package but fail terribly when you leave the bathroom in the morning. The following steps will help you find the perfect foundation and give you a flawless finish every time!

1) The first step is selecting the right shade for your skin. This refers to the level of depth or lightness/darkness. Selecting a shade that is either too light or too dark is the most common mistake made in foundation selection.

The best way to find the best shade is to narrow it down to three or four of the closest matches. Simply dot a small amount of each shade along your jaw line and blend lightly. The shade that blends the best wins!

2) The next step is to find the right tone. Tone refers to the undertones in your skin color. This means the pigment mixture of warm or cool. Sit in front of a mirror while wearing no makeup. Drape garments or cloths of various tones across your chest and shoulders and see how your skin appears with each one.

Think back to the color wheel you learned about in art class. Yellows indicate warm tones, while blues are the cool end of the spectrum. Play around with this draping procedure and you'll quickly realize which tones complement your skin most.

Once you've determined the tonal value of your skin's natural pigmentation, you can more easily find a foundation shade that will blend correctly.

3) Next, decide what type of coverage you need. If you are lucky enough to have near perfect skin but just wish to smooth a few imperfections, a sheer finish would be great for you. If you have uneven skin tone or blotchiness, you will need a foundation with full coverage.

4) What type of finish is right for you? If your skin is oily, you'll find that a matte finish will help control the overall shiny feeling you get throughout the day. For dry or aging skin, a foundation with luminous coverage will less likely show lines or flakiness.

5) Now you can find which consistency is right for you. Foundations now come in a multitude of mediums (no pun intended). The texture of the foundation usually determines the coverage and finish as well.

Tinted Moisturizer, Mousse, and Loose Powder- These are usually sheer coverage.

Mineral- This is the most versatile of all foundations. Depending on the brand and the amount of pigment in their formula, you can usually control the amount of coverage with the application. The finish is also great for all skin types because it is neither too matte nor too luminous.

Traditional Liquid- Liquid foundations are the most common. They themselves come in many coverage varieties. If your skin is oily, you will need to follow with a loose or pressed powder.

Cream to Powder, Wet Sponge Powder, and Pancake- These offer the most coverage and are matte finish.

Cream- Cream foundations are mostly formulated for dry skin. They often contain moisturizer and are luminous finish.

6) Consider your lifestyle. What's the climate where you live? Do you have high humidity? If so, you may want to use a matte finish. Oil blotters and foundation primers help oily skin in humid weather avoid shininess.

Are you active outdoors? If you're in the sun often, consider a foundation that has an SPF.

What time of day or evening will you be wearing your foundation? Lighting can make a big difference on your overall appearance.

7) Proper skin care will help your skin's appearance and provide a better "foundation for your foundation". Proper cleanliness, moisture balance, and routine exfoliation will prepare your skin for smoother coverage.

Don't be overwhelmed by all the choices in foundation out there. Use these simple steps and enjoy a flawless finish everyday!
